"If you build it, he will come." -Field of Dreams, 1989
Providing opportunities is the most basic necessity of education. I believe that health and physical education classes should be all about opportunity. I provide students a chance to experience something relevant to their entire lives, making material hit as close to home as I can. The end goal of my classes are that the students walk away knowing more than they did when they walked in and that they took advantage of the opportunities to try new things. I also believe that students can form life altering habits from my classes, whether they be as simple as brushing their teeth every day to starting a work-out routine to completely change their lifestyle. It is my responsibility to give each student a chance to grow and develop, gaining confidence, strength and knowledge along the way.
I am passionate about improving my own health and being a source of assistance for others to do the same. I have seen what poor health habits can do to a person because they didn't have the opportunities afforded myself. I want to provide others with an educated working knowledge so they can make informed decisions about their own health.
First and foremost, physical education is about improving each students' personal fitness. After that it becomes more about letting them experience new things that they wouldn't get to do ordinarily. I want to provide a physical education class that is more than a mere practice session for team sports, but rather an exploratory session of how the human body works, what to do to get stronger, and how to lead a healthy, active lifestyle. Physical education isn't about the 30-55 minutes spend in the class, but the 75-80 years that a person isn't in school.
All it takes is the building of opportunity and willingness to try.
