I spent the fall semester of 2013 student teaching in a health classroom at Caldwell High School. This was the first time I was responsible for students' knowledge. I was greeted with several welcomed surprises. Getting to know all of the students was a great experience. I learned a lot about myself as a teacher, applying the theory and philosophy to a real classroom. It may have only been an 18 week time investment, but I gained so much from my freshmen. I was excited that so many students found the nutrition unit so informative and useful. I was pleasantly surprised that they wanted more than to pass the class, but they wanted to learn how to live a healthful life. My goal in any health class is to give the students enough information so that they can leave my class and have the knowledge to make an informed choice.
I was pleased that my students learned so much from me, but what is more important is that I learned more from them about myself, how to be a successful teacher, and what not to do.
